White Sandy Beaches

Semporna is located on a pretty bay with good beaches. Pure white sandy beaches, coconut palms and tranquil waters lapping over colourful reefs in the beautiful turquoise waters of the Sulawesi Sea.

Giant Clam Research Centre

Take some time to tour the Giant Clam Research Center in Boheydulang Island where located under the Tun Sakaran Marine Park. The Researcher will brief on how the giant clam spawning and work on the young in the center. This centre cultivates all the seven species of giant clams. Total got 8 species found in the world – We are glad that had all are here but only one cannot put in center because it attached on Coral Reef. Two of species that had here which are already extinct  in other country.  The young Giant Clams to be released back into the sea after 6-7 months.

Seaweed Farming

Semporna has a history of seaweed horticulture as a source of alternative income among the fishing community, and it continues to grow as an industry.

High quality cultivated seaweeds are grown in clear blue sea at Off Islands of Semporna. In this district the seaweed culture project has already been implemented in Pulau Bumbun, Sabangkat, Selakan, Karindingan, Sipanggau, Nusa Tengah, Menampilik, Omadal, Kulapuan, Bohayen, Danawan and etc.

Semporna is located near the world’s largest seaweed producing areas, an vast ocean area include that of Southern Philippines and Northern Sulawesi of Indonesia. In the wet markets of Sabah one can find two slimy type of seaweeds on sale, one type is yellowish, the other is dark green seaweed on stalks with round buds. Both are called rumpai laut by the local. The seaweed culture project in Semporna has become an income generator for the locals and is helping to enhance Semporna district’s economy as the leading seaweed producer in Sabah.
